Background

Humber Current is a website that showcases the profiles and projects of graduate students from Humber College's Faculty of Media and Creative Arts. Several issues with the current site have been noted that affect its performance and overall success. A site redesign is essential in order to provide a better experience and meet the client’s goals and expectations. Furthermore, creating pages within the Humber Current site for programs that are not currently represented (Bachelor of Creative Advertising and Acting for Film and TV specifically) is a top priority for this project.

Problem

The main issues with the site are:

  • Lack of content and consistency between program pages

  • Limited navigation, filter, and search options

  • Poor visual design and hierarchy

Defining The Problem

How might we help graduate students showcase their work to attract employers, build networks, and inspire future students?

Proposed Solution

A website revamp is essential to achieve a comprehensive and impactful online platform that caters to graduate students from diverse programs. This revamp enables students to showcase their work and establish connections with potential employers. Additionally, the platform facilitates prospective students in exploring program offerings and deliverables from graduating students. It also serves as a space for employers or recruiters to discover and connect with potential future employees. The enhancement in the website's functionality will greatly contribute to improving Humber Current's online presence and SEO.

Final Prototype

Before the redesign, the Humber Current website struggled with poor design and navigation. It lacked consistency and failed to provide an intuitive user experience. The disjointed elements made it challenging for users to navigate through the content, resulting in a less-than-optimal online experience.

Following the redesign, the Humber Current website has undergone a remarkable transformation. The user experience is now seamless and user-friendly, featuring clear navigation and a consistent design concept throughout. The new website not only addresses the previous issues but also introduces a fun and creative vibe, making it more engaging for visitors. Notably, deliberate efforts have been made to establish connections between pages, even for different programs.

Conclusion

By developing a user-centric website that showcases the profiles and projects of graduate students, I have witnessed the impact of user experience design on enhancing engagement and facilitating connections between students and visitors. Collaborating with stakeholders, web developers, and fellow UX designers throughout the project has been a rewarding experience, fostering effective communication and teamwork. Overall, the Humber Current project has been valuable, contributing to my growth as a UX designer.
